The 14-year-old boy who became a national sensation and sparked a brief domestic terrorist controversy debate won’t have to worry about United States laws for much longer.
Ahmed Mohamed, 14, has lived in the Dallas-area of Texas with his family long before he became an international headline for a misunderstood “clock bomb.” It’s that very device which has won him a prestigious scholarship at a school halfway around the world, according to FoxNews.com.
Ahmed’s father, Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed, told the Dallas Morning News last Tuesday that Ahmed has accepted a scholarship opportunity in Qatar and their entire family will be moving there. Of the approximately 35.9 million Americans who move every year, count them among the 0.33% who move from the U.S. to another country.
The average American moves about 12 times in their lifetime and this will be the first major one for Mohamed. The offer he accepted is from the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development to join their Young Innovators Program. The offer includes a full scholarship for his secondary and undergraduate education.
“We are going to move to a place where my kids can study and learn, and all of them being accepted by that country,” his father said in a statement.
The statement went on to say that they have been “overwhelmed” by the many offers of support and potential opportunities since the incident that led to Ahmed’s brief arrest on September 14 at his school in Irving.
Ahmed’s life has been something of a whirlwind ever since one of his teachers mistakenly thought he had brought a bomb to school that ended up being a homemade clock. Local law enforcement ended up dropping all the charges, but not before he became an instant social media sensation.
Since then he has visited the offices of companies including Google and Facebook, the president of Sudan, Omar al-Bashir, and even the president of the United States, Barack Obama himself. He came away with the following thought from his experiences thus far:
“Don’t judge a person by the way they look. Always judge them by their heart.”
